In 1963, Joe Perry, then just a struggling Hopedale High School student, watched his friend Steve Rose play a set with his band The Wildcats on a Friday night.
After the show, Rose, who had been giving Perry guitar lessons, took out a brand new guitar – a Gretsch Country Gentleman.

Joe Perry is not only a prolific songwriter and guitarist, he is an acclaimed author. Perry recently completed a whirlwind book tour to support Rocks: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith. He began the process of greeting, signing and participating in Q & A’s for thousands of fans in early October. After hitting New York and Boston, he took in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Chicagoland and then shredded his way through prominent book stores and several Guitar Center stores in California and Arizona. Tomek Spirala, General Manager of Guitar Center, Arlington Heights, Il., helped field phone calls and took part in preparing his popular, suburban store for Joe’s much-anticipated visit on October 13, 2014. Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry says that his new autobiography goes into more depth than others on the market.
In an attempt to set the record straight regarding the history of Aerosmith, lead guitarist Joe Perry recently released his autobiography earlier this month, entitled ‘Rocks: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith.’ The effort marked the third time where a member of the rock group released their own tell-all accounts, with Perry falling behind lead vocalist Steven Tyler and drummer Joey Kramer, however the guitarist notes that his release is more authentic than most currently on the shelves.
