Walk His Way: Aerosmith Guitar Legend Joe Perry Interviewed

joeperrycropIf one thing can be said of Joe Perry, it’s that the man flat-out rocks. Is there a more archetypal rock guitarist on the planet today than the legendary Aerosmith six-stringer? As one-half of the Boston band’s guitarsenal with Brad Whitford, Perry has been a driving force behind such Aerosmith classics as “Walk This Way,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Dream On” … (the list goes on and on) since the band’s formation in 1970.

So it’s a natural choice for Perry to title his new autobiography Rocks: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith. Like Perry’s playing, the book is to the point, concise, punchy, powerful and smart. For a man who’s typically preferred to “Let the Music Do the Talking” (the title of the 1980 debut album from his solo band The Joe Perry Project), Perry turns out to be a great storyteller as he shares revealing memories not only of his up-and-down life with the band, but also his childhood (in which he was more interested in aquatics than music) and personal life.

It’s a great book from a rock and roll giant. When we spoke with Perry, he was in the midst of an exhaustive promotional effort to get the word out about his book. In the following interview, conducted exclusively for Technology Tell, Perry dishes on what prompted him to put together an autobiography, how he remembered his history (especially the years of “misadventures”), his guitar preferences, and the future of his band.

I had the good fortune to talk with Joe first hand about these songs, as well as his guitar techniques, his friendship with Johnny Depp, and the status of the his next studio CD as a solo artist or with Aerosmith.
