Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler & Joe Perry Nominated For Tony Awards For “Spongebob Squarepants: The Musical”

Aerosmith has received almost every stellar award for music there is in the book. They’ve won American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Grammys, MTV Video Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and so on and so on. But one award that they have yet to place on their mantlepiece for their decades of work in music is a Tony Award.

But all of that could change because both Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have received nominations for a Tony Award for their musical contributions for SpongeBob Squarepants: The Musical for “Best Original Score (Music And/Or Lyrics) Written For The Theatre.” Listen to their composition “Bikini Bottom Boogie” below!

After ruling the airwaves and conquering the big screen, animated superstar SpongeBob SquarePants is heading to the stage — and bringing a couple of Aerosmith members with him.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical is due to make its Broadway bow on Nov. 6 at the Palace Theater in New York City, and in advance of the stage show’s debut, its original soundtrack recording has made its way online via NPR’s First Look series. Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper & More Will Write Music for THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL; Premieres in Chicago Next Summer!

The World Premiere of The SpongeBob Musical will begin performances on Tuesday, June 7th at Broadway in Chicago’s Oriental Theatre (24 West Randolph Street, Chicago, IL). This is a limited engagement through Sunday, July 3, 2016.

The SpongeBob Musical is co-conceived and directed by Tina Landau with a book by Kyle Jarrow, music supervision byTom Kitt.

The SpongeBob Musical will be a one-of-a-kind musical event with original songs by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of AEROSMITH, Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., with an additional song by David Bowie and additional lyrics by Jonathan Coulton.

The design team includes scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Kevin Adams, projection design by Peter Nigriniand sound design by Walter Trarbach.

Following its engagement in Chicago, the musical will open on Broadway in the 2016-2017 season.
